RFID Pet Tags: The Future of Pet Tracking and Identification

Losing a pet is every pet owner's nightmare. Traditional Dog & Cat collars and Traditional ID tags can get lost or be maliciously removed. The RFID Microchip which is a legal requirement in the UK (and some other countries) is   Implanted (Subcutaneously) under the Skin of your pet usually before it arrives at its forever home. Knowing if this permanent Identification method is working is incredibly important, usually the only way to check if the RFID Microchip is working a visit to the vet so they can scan it with their RFID Reader. In this guide, we’ll explore how RFID pet tags work, their benefits, and why being able to check them at home is becoming more affordable and a must-have for pet owners.

What is an RFID Pet Tag?

An Pet Microchip is an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) Tag, It is a small, lightweight device Implanted under the skin of your Pet by a veterinarian or by a trained Microchip Implant Service provider (lay-Implanter). As the Microchip is under the skin of your Pet, it is Permanent and for the most part it is tamper proof. This in in contrast to traditional tags, which rely on visible contact details, and the privacy concerns this may bring.

How Do RFID Pet Tags Work?

RFID tags store digital information which is a Globally Unique 15 digit Number (Controlled by ICAR) allocated to the Microchip your pet.  This Pet Identification number might look something like this "999,123,456,789,123" when read on and RFID Microchip reader. As you will see the number has no owner or pet related information at all and is very secure. It can only be accessed using an RFID scanner.

So how does anyone know  this is my Pet?

Answer: The Microchip Number will be registered with an approved National Database, anyone can submit an "Animal Found" request or notification to the Animal database online or by phone. The Third party Database (such as Petlog) will then look at the information they have which is attributed to the Microchip Number (example:"999,123,456,789,123") and they will contact the Pet owner to arrange the reunion.

RFID Microchips deliver the following benefits:

1. Permanent and Secure Identification

Unlike traditional tags that fade or get lost, and expose your private information (e.g address or phone number),  RFID tags store digital information permanently, risk free under the skin of your Pet.

2. Fast and Easy Scanning

With a simple scan, vets, shelters, or pet wardens can access your pet’s Microchip details  quickly and accurately.

3. No Need for Batteries

Unlike GPS trackers that require charging, RFID Microchips are passive and work without any batteries or other power source, making them maintenance-free and life long, they  can be scanned quickly by shelters, vets, or even some responsible Pet owner who have their own RFID Scanner.

4. Enhances Pet Safety

If your pet ever goes missing, RFID technology increases the chances of a quick reunion, ensuring you the owner can be verified and contacted quickly and securely.

RFID vs. GPS Trackers: What’s the Difference?

Many pet owners confuse RFID tags with GPS trackers, but they serve different purposes:

Feature RFID Pet Microchips GPS Trackers
Purpose Identification Real-time location tracking
Power Source Passive (no battery) Requires battery
Range Short-range (scanner needed) Long-range (uses satellites)
Cost Affordable More expensive
Best for Identification & pet recovery Live tracking & monitoring

Conclusion

RFID Microchips (Cats & Dogs) are required by Law in the UK, they are usually already Implanted into the Pet before it arrives at its Forever Home, they don't have any batteries and are the best possible form of life long ID for your Pet.
